Hengjie's Tofu Cat Litter Original is the unscented base SKU in our plant-based line. It is produced from soy residue and food-grade starch binders, extruded into uniform pellets, and dried to a controlled moisture ceiling before packing. The formula contains no added fragrance. How the pellet is made

The process is short and repeatable: raw materials are weighed and mixed to a water content of no more than 23%, fed to the granulator with the die selected for the ordered pellet diameter, then dried by microwave to ≤10% moisture. The dried pellet passes over a rotary screen; undersize and oversize fractions are separated before the packing line. At packing, a first-article check is performed on clump behavior and visible dust. Packing proceeds only after that check clears. The retained sample from each batch stays with the production record.

Microwave drying is used rather than a single high-temperature air pass because it reduces the moisture gradient across the pellet. A pellet that is dry on the surface but moist at the core is more likely to soften in the bag during a long sea freight leg. The ≤10% packing moisture is the main control against mold risk in transit.

Flushability: what the product is formulated for, and what it is not
The Original pellet disperses in water under adequate flow. It is intended for small-quantity flushing-one or two clumps at a time-with the toilet flushed immediately after. It is not a "flush any volume" product. Municipal plumbing codes and wastewater guidelines differ by market, and some retail buyers require a local test report before allowing an on-pack flushable claim. Hengjie supplies the dispersion behavior data from production retention samples; buyers who need a third-party flushability report for a specific market should specify that requirement at the quotation stage so the testing scope and cost can be confirmed before order.
Raw materials and formula
The pellet is built on soy residue (okara) and food-grade starch. Starch raw materials used on this line are covered by food-grade safety documentation, and the soy fraction is sourced as a by-product of soy processing rather than from dedicated edible-grade soy protein streams. The Original version carries no fragrance additive and no colorant. Pellet color varies slightly between batches with the natural tone of the soy and starch inputs-typical of an unscented plant-fiber pellet.
The formula runs on Hengjie's plant-based lines in Liaoning and Anhui. These are separate from the bentonite lines. Changeover between tofu and cassava runs follows a documented clean-down, and the first production output after a changeover is held for clump and dust verification before packing.

Raw materials undergo twin-shaft mixing with water added to achieve a moisture content of 16%–20%. (Note: Alkali addition is required for producing premium-grade products, whereas ordinary ore sand does not require it.)
The mixed raw materials are fed at a constant rate into a twin-roll extrusion machine to form cakes. These cakes are then stockpiled for a minimum of seven days before drying.
The extruded semi-finished products are fed into a dryer; the temperature is controlled to reduce the moisture content of the granules to 3%–5%.
The dried semi-finished products enter the crushing hopper and are conveyed via belt to a vertical-shaft crusher. The crushed granules are screened; those meeting the 1–2 mm or 1–4 mm specifications are collected in bulk bags, while granules larger than 4 mm are recirculated through the crusher.
The screened granules undergo a second drying process to reduce moisture to ≤3%. They then pass through a rotary screen for final sizing and are collected in bulk bags, awaiting coating and packaging.
Packaging is performed according to production order requirements. Before packaging, materials undergo vibrating screening for dust removal, and a "first-article inspection" is conducted; packaging proceeds only if the product meets quality standards regarding clumping and dust levels. During packaging, attention is paid to batch coding, bag weight, sealing, quantity, and the attachment of accurate identification tags.
Finished products are stored in the warehouse according to established protocols, sorted by product type and arranged neatly.

Q: What prevents the pellet from molding during a 30–40 day sea transit?
A: The packing moisture ceiling is 10%, and the bags are sealed after the drying and screening step. For humid destination markets, we can supply the product in vacuum bags or foil-lined pouches; the buyer specifies the barrier layer at order. We do not recommend woven bags alone for long-haul humid routes unless the bag has an inner liner.
Q: Is clump strength tested per batch, or only at product development?
A: A first-article clump check is performed at the packing line for every production run. The check is a practical scoop test on a retained sample, not a laboratory compression test. If a buyer requires a numeric clump-strength value stated on the COA, that method and acceptance range need to be agreed before the first order, because the test protocol affects the result.
Q: Can I order 3,000 kg with my own printed bag?
A: Yes, provided the bag artwork and dimensions are confirmed before the run. The 3,000 kg MOQ applies to the litter itself; printed packaging has its own minimum run quantity from the bag supplier, which we will quote together with the litter. Neutral stock bags can ship against the 3,000 kg litter MOQ without a separate print minimum.
Q: How is cross-contamination handled if tofu and bentonite run in the same plant?
A: They do not share the same production line. Tofu and cassava run on the plant-based lines; bentonite runs on the mineral lines. Within the plant-based line, changeover from tofu to cassava includes a clean-down and a first-output hold for clump and dust verification. The retained sample record identifies which product ran before and after each batch.
Q: Can the Original SKU be supplied with a fragrance if my market expects one?
A: Yes. The Original formula is the unscented base. Fragrance addition is a separate formulation step and does not change the pellet diameter or packing moisture ceiling. Available stock fragrance profiles include green tea, lavender, peach, and charcoal; custom profiles can be developed against a sample, but they carry a separate development lead time and may affect the MOQ.
